My new murder mystery, Murder On A Monday, A Rachel Mathews Murder Mystery published by High Tide Publication Incorporated, is at press, and the cover has now been revealed! I hope it gives readers a good idea of what’s in store, and I’ll let you know when and where it can be purchased soon.
The story centers on Rachel Mathews and Donna O’Hare, friends and owners of a magazine for small business located in the City of Victoria, BC, at the southern tip of Vancouver Island. They are shocked when they stumble across the body of Jody Smythe sprawled in the stairwell of their office building on their way back to work after lunch. Jody was manager of the seniors’ residence next door, and someone has cut her throat. Who would have killed her in such a horrifying way in a public building in the middle of the day?
Impulsive Donna, enamored with the son of the seniors’ residence owner, can’t believe good-looking David had anything to do with the murder, but Rachel is unconvinced. Maybe Jody and David were lovers or part of a love triangle. Maybe Jody knew something about the residence that made her dangerous to the owner or her son. The police check everywhere but can’t find the murder weapon or anyone with a motive for killing the young woman. Two more bodies surface within a week and it becomes obvious these next two murders are also related to Jody’s death.
As Rachel searches for explanations, she seeks help from a former hippy, a charming cop, two elderly women who live in the seniors’ residence, and an actuary living across the hall from her. A story of deception, theft, adultery, and a mother’s twisted love unfolds as she plunges deeper and deeper into the mystery. Will the case be solved before Donna’s attraction to a prime suspect proves fatal?
For anyone who becomes the target of a physical assault, psychological self-defense is a great tool, and after her sister introduces her to a book on the subject, Rachel learns how to use it just in time.
I had a lot of fun writing this mystery and set the story in the city where I attended university and then lived and taught school there for three years. I love to go to the Island from time to time and visit Victoria with its enchanting gardens, wonderful climate, and the Pacific Ocean on three sides, which holds so many happy memories for me. The area is every bit as beautiful as I describe in the story.
I’m now finishing the second book in the Rachel Mathews Murder Mystery Series: Murder On A Tuesday—watch for it. HaHaHa, who am I kidding? I’ll make absolutely sure you don’t miss it!
Maureen has also written and illustrated two Viking Club Mysteries for children ages 8-12: Something’s Missing, published in 2012— a hockey sports-mystery—and Someone’s Trapped, published in 2014—a soccer sports-mystery. They are both for sale on Amazon.com, Amazon.ca, and Barnes and Noble, and can be ordered from any bookstore.
